Germany commissioned 1,153 U-Boats (Unterseeboot) during the Second World War. They were devastating to Allied shipping: over 3,400 ships sunk and many more damaged. But U-boats also suffered some of the worst losses among Germany's armed forces: over 700 submarines lost and more than 28,000 submariners killed.
This visualization is a timeline of all 1,153 U-Boats, detailing each submarine's construction, service, successes, and fate. Visit the GitHub repository to access the source data and code. Read the companion piece on Medium to see more U-Boat data visualizations.
